Chic picnic: Your best memory of the summer

Jun 2, 2016 | blog, blogue, blogue

In summer, nothing beats dining under the sun or the stars, especially when you turn this appetizing occasion into a special event. Whether you enjoy your spread in your backyard or in a riverside park, say goodbye to paper plates and unwieldy sandwiches that fall apart. Today, people plan picnics as though they were preparing a lavish meal: menu and decor must be a feast for the eyes!

FIND A LOCATION YOU LOVE

There’s bound to be a place near you that will delight your guests, such as a garden, a park, a forest, a beach, or simply a corner of your backyard. If you’re a city dweller, consider a high spot that offers a view of the city, such as a lookout or the roof of a building.

SET THE MOOD WITH A THEME

To set the tone for your event, choose a common thread. For example, have a tea party with a rustic chic theme, using vintage cutlery, candlesticks and flowers. You could also invite your pals over for happy hour and opt for a decidedly modern look with colourful accessories. Planning a get-together with your besties? Go for a spa theme, with scented candles, flowers, scattered pebbles, bamboo placemats and slate boards.

MAKE THE FOOD BITE-SIZED

If you’re hosting a real picnic on the grass, bring a large white tablecloth and generous cushions. Simplify your guests’ experience by eliminating plates and cutlery. Prepare hors d’oeuvres with Boursin cheese, along with vegetable crudités, colourful spring rolls and gourmet mini-sandwiches that fit easily in the hand.

PACK IT IN A PRETTY BASKET

You want to look good toting your meal around, so make sure to have the right carrier. For a retro style, why not repurpose your grandparents’ old suitcase? You could also get yourself a smartly designed picnic bag that’s insulated and carries bottles.

Summer in Canada is all too short, but happily, there is no limit to brilliant ideas for outdoor dining. All you need is a nice day (or evening), your imagination, and, of course, Boursin cheese. So, get inspired and enjoy the picnic season!
